U.S. Army’s New Next Generation Rifle with Artificial Intelligence

U.S. Army’s new rifle will employ Artificial
Intelligence algorithms. The U.S. Army’s next-generation rifle and
machine gun will be fitted with cutting-edge fire control technologies, including digital
weapon camera and Artificial Intelligence. A new initiative by the US Army suggests “another
significant step towards lethal autonomous weapons,” leading artificial-intelligence
researcher, who has called as Automated System or so-called “autonomous killer machine.”
The Next Generation Squad Weapon expected to be equipped with a rifle mounted advanced
fire control optic system, according to new data from the Joint Service Small Arms Program.
The new weapon system will combine the firepower and effective range of a machine gun with
the precision and ergonomics of a rifle, yielding capability improvements in accuracy, range
and lethality. The weapon will be lightweight, fire lightweight
ammunition and have reduced acoustic and flash signature.
The Army Contracting Command has called on potential vendors in industry and academia
to submit ideas to help build its Advanced Targeting and Lethality Automated System,
which a Defense Department solicitation says will use artificial intelligence and machine
learning to give ground-combat vehicles and next-generation rifle autonomous targeting
capabilities. This will allow weapons to “acquire, identify, and engage targets at least 3X faster
than the current manual process,” according to the notice.
Stuart Russell, a professor of computer science at UC Berkeley and a highly regarded Artificial
Intelligence expert, tells Quartz he is deeply concerned about the idea of tanks and other
land-based fighting vehicles eventually having the capability to fire on their own.
“It looks very much as if we are heading into an arms race where the current ban on
full lethal autonomy” a section of US military law that mandates some level of human interaction
when actually making the decision to fire” will be dropped as soon as it’s politically
convenient to do so,” says Russell. The Next Generation Squad Weapon expected
to be equipped with a rifle mounted advanced fire control optic system, according to new
data from the Joint Service Small Arms Program. According to a June report from the Joint
Service Small Arms Program, new Army’s rifle will employ Artificial Intelligence algorithms
for threat recognition and prioritization. In addition, a new weapon system will be fitted
new systems capable of providing вigitally Enhanced aiming when paired with aim augmentation
capable weapon platform (steerable barrel, electronic trigger) automated target recognition
and direct view primary optic with augmented reality overlay.
Also noted that NGSW will be compatible with legacy optics and night vision devices and
will integrate with improved, more capable accessories and enablers as they develop.
According to Military.com, NGSW is an effort to design a new infantry rifle or carbine
to replace the M4A1 and a new squad automatic rifle to replace the M249 Squad Automatic
rifle. Thank You For Watching. Please Like, Share,
