WE CONTINUE TONIGHT OUR SERIES FROM AUSTRALIA. JOHN OLIVER LEARNED THAT FOLLOWING A MASS SHOOTING IN STRAUL, THE COUNTRY INTRODUCED GUN CONTROL, AND IT WORKED. SO HOW CAN AMERICA TAKE THIS VALUABLE LESSON AND IGNORE IT? JOHN OLIVER FINDS OUT IN THIS, OUR FINAL INSTALLMENT.>>PREVIOUSLY I WENT TO STRAUL WHEN I LEARNED IN 1996 THEIR GOVERNMENT ENACTED SWEEPING GUN CONTROL LAWS. IT’S A VERY DIFFERENT CULTURE, DIFFERENT PEOPLE, DIFFERENT EVERYTHING.>>THERE’S NO SIMILARITY WITH AUSTRALIA. WHAT KIND OF THINGS WERE YOU HEARING WHEN YOU SUGGEST GUN CONTROL?>>THAT GOVERNMENT WAS BECOMING A DICTATORSHIP.>>THAT’S ONE.>>WE’RE TOLD THAT PEOPLE WOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND THEIR PROPERTY AND THEIR FAMILY.>>ANOTHER THAT’S DEFINITELY TWO.>>THAT DEMOCRACY IS AT STAKE SOMEHOW IF GOVERNMENT DECIDES THERE SHOULD BE A BACKGROUND CHECK.>>ALL RIGHT, THREE.>>WE’RE ABOUT TO BE INVADED BY THE INDONESIANS.>>THAT’S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. NO ONE IN AMERICA IS AFRAID OF INDONESIANS. ARE THEY AFRAID OF MEXICANS AND MUSLIMS COMING? MAYBE,. 1. Funny how Europeans love to lecture us about guns and ridicule us for having them as a defense against tyranny when for the entire 20th century there was nothing but Tyrannical European governments slaughtering their own people. It's not like this was only WWII either, genocide was happening in Bosnia in the mid 90's.

  2. I particularly loved the bit where they talked to an Australian guy who was initially against gun control, but then it happened, and he was like, "Oh, hey, it wasn't the end of the world after all. Well, alrighty then!" And just sort of mellowed out. I imagine a lot of Americans would have much the same experience if they would give it a chance… maybe it's time to finally stop listening to disingenuous, fear-mongering politicians and lobbyists?^^

  3. Fact: Where I live, I need guns to defend myself. I'd be dead by the time the law get to my place if I have an intruder.

  4. Set your gun on a table and ask it to kill people.

Give your gun to a mentally ill person and don't say anything.

  5. This Philip Van Cleave dude is a complete fucking idiot who has no idea how stupid he is. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so depressing. Just watch him on Sacha Baron Cohen's show This is America

  6. 6:09 Little did that koala know, the humanoid parrot that just walked by would end up having a Koala Chlamydia Ward named after him one day….

  7. So if we can completely get rid of drugs, there is no point to have drug laws at all?
Exhale…Let me think about it for a minute
    LOL LOL LOL

  8. I've said this before and i'll say it again: The US was never meant to be safe, it was meant to be free. Why isn't the US as free as it should be? Because we have allowed sensationalism, embellishments, and fear mongering to strip us of our fundamental and inherent rights in exchange for the illusion of feeling safe. Freedom requires self control, the more freedom you have and/or want, the more self control you must exude.

  9. What is really batshit crazy, is they've actually had more mass shootings since banning guns. Gun control, does not work. Law enforcement DOES.

Port Arthur massacre 28 April 1996
Oakhampton Heights Shooting 20 March 2005 Mass shooting. Remember, this is now Zero Mass Shootings since 1996.
Monash University shooting 21 October 2002. We are now at Zero Mass Shootings since 1996!
Hunt family murders 9 September 2014. Still at Zero Mass Shootings since 1996.
Wedderburn shooting 23 October 2014. Wow I can't believe gun control worked that well! Just a reminder, we're at ZERO Mass Shootings since 1996.
2014 Sydney hostage crisis 15 – 16 December 2014 (not exactly a mass shooting, but it was a lone gunman, that was on the verge of a mass shooting). But let us not forget, Zero Mass Shootings since 1996.
Osmington shooting 11 May 2018. Zero Mass Shootings since 1996.
Pymble shooting 23 January 1987. Oh wait, how did we get to SEVEN mass shootings since 1996?

  10. "Black lives matter and the president is a white nationalist supporting nazi." "The government isn't growing out of control, get real. They will protect us… hand in your guns". On another episode of why the left keeps losing.

  11. Next, he should delve into the issue of all the high profile figureheads in the UK and Australia being exposed as human trafficking pedophiles.

  12. Mass shootings continue in America unabated. Eventually, hopefully within my lifetime, enough people will finally stand up and fight for their lives on this issue. I own a gun, but I only own it because I fear other gun owners. Sad truth.

  13. 0:40 look what that guy is doing these
Making advertisements for working guns for kids. In who is America with borat
    https://youtu.be/CDULmIOqwA8

  14. If I were an Australian, I'd absolutely want to have a gun. Basically everything there exists to kill humans.

  15. Will New Zealand politicians be courageous enough to follow Aussies on gun control after the horrific massacre march 2019? I hope all countries learn from this.

  16. All guns should be illegal… I have the best case as to why. There is a man that over the last 15 year's has broken in to many many homes in our little community and he then does unspeakable things to the wife and other family members, and forces the husband to watch at gun point. He then robs them, disappears, and hasnt been caught. I have always had a gun in case he ever decided to show up at my home, BUT if lawmakers could make guns illegal to own, then he wouldn't have a gun anymore, I wouldn't have one anymore either of course, because I have a family and don't break the law. That way if the guy were to show up at my home it would be mono e mono, I think mono is what he gave his last victim actually, man to manย  I could then use my bear hands to beat the guy off if he were to jump on my wife or children. FBI statistics say that twice as many people die every year by hands and feet than all rifles combined including the AR-15 (the black scary gun) so naturally hands would be my weapon of choice.

  17. The first 6 years the gun crime actually went from 1.6 to 1.8 percent in Australia where during that time America had an INSANE drop in gun violence. Gangs account for almost all of America's gun crime and Australia doesn't have gangs like we do when looking at overall numbers. Btw more people have guns in Australia today compared to then.

  18. The criminal element among us would love to live without the fear of being shot while kicking in your door while armed with illegally bought weapons on the black market. Black market gun dealers who are far more unscrupulous than legal gun dealers would also enjoy their increased untaxed profits. Just imagine how much easier home invasions will be with an unarmed public who are unable to defend their wives and daughters from criminals who would love to know you have no access to a weapon. I am sure the criminals will wait to rape murder and or rob you until the government shows up to prove the protection money you paid was worth it though but I wouldn't hold my breath.

  19. The 2nd Amendment recognizes an American Citizens Right to own and keep weapons sufficient to Rebel against an oppressive Government .
Per the Federalist Papers that explain the intent of the Constitutional Amendments.

  20. The reason why US Gov doesn't implement any sort of gun control laws/regulations is simple. It's basic economics – they are the largest manufacturer of weapons (by far) in the world and there's only so many wars that exist (and can be created) on Earth in order to offload the produce and obtain a profit. Since guns are expensive to build and the US market is the largest in value terms, banning guns is actually "economic suicide" (in addition to "political suicide"). The US defense budget says it all. To make a simple hypothetical analogy – let's say as a country we are mass producing chocolates and it has been found that obesity and diabetes has become a national problem, so as the gov, I got two options. One is to introduce laws/regulations/awareness programs that are designed to make the people less inclined to purchase chocolates. The 2nd option is to completely ignore and downplay this reality by stating that it's actually something else (like oily food) that mainly causes these health problems thereby ensuring that the sales of chocolates and the cashflow is unaffected.
I don't think that even the president of the country has the power to change (or at least influence) this money-comes-first governing system installed in the USA.

  21. Weโ€™re so much alike, like how you wanted independence so badly, you fought the Australian revolution, and how your independent spirited ancestors constantly pushed the frontiers until you inhabit virtually all of your land mass. Sheep, Australians, same thing really ๐Ÿ˜

  22. If guns are not the problem what is ? People lol
Australians are just too trigger happy and know they cannot be trusted with guns so they voluntarily turned their guns in . Lol

  23. ยฟYou know what 99% of all mass shootings have in common? Gun free zones.
Mandatory Carry saves lives, gun control is racist, and btw, ALL assault weapons were banned in the US in 1986.
    The First Purpose of the Second Amendment was to enable the people to meet unlawful force with like force; If the Founders had foreseen the future, they would have written a very different Second Amendment;

  24. US is really a fucked up country or atleast a huge chunk of its citizens are. I feel sorry for sane people living amongst the absolutely moronic oxygen wasters.

  25. So why a 2ed amendment?, when we have a 4th amendment that outlines property and person rights? To be secure in your personal items, things you rightfully own? Free from searches without cause or reason?!?!?

  26. This is probably my favorite daily show segment ever and John Oliver is brilliant in it

This is satire at its best

  27. but no matter how much you tell this stuff to the pro-gun people and no matter how many mass shootings there are, things don't change!

  28. That Virginian guy was right about "ninja police" in retrospect, given John eventually did a segment on militarized police on HBO. I doubt white guys like him have much reason to be concerned by them though.

  29. Stop lying, Australia has had around 8 mass shootings since theย 1996 gun ban. They just changed the definition of a mass shooting to be 6 or more people killed. They've had mass shootings where 3, 4 or 5 were killed and 9 or 10 injured. In 2018 Australia had one where 7 people were shot and killed. If you're happy with not having the freedom to own guns, then more power to you, but we are not giving up our freedoms and rights to fight crime. This is the job of the police and judicial and mental health system. If you think we have a problem, then look at overhauling the judicial system and stop patting criminals on the wrist. In my state we don't have mass shootings, because everyone has the freedom to carry a concealed firearm in public. The freakballs are too scared to attempt a mass shooting here, because they know they'd end up with a bullet in the back of their head.

  30. How do u know that u got all the guns. I grew up in Montana and everyone in my family and all my neighbors and friends familyโ€™s all had guns. But I support the second amendment not because I like having a fire arm but because I truly believe that the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. So what if I hand in my weapon and right afterwards I decided to go to the crowded food court near by and some maniac that only wants to watch the world burn and die making this happen comes firing in with any weapon really weather it be a assault rifle or a pistol. When I got my concealed carry permit I thought long and hard about the Scenario and understood that my having this weapon gave me the responsibility to put my life in even more danger and face the attacker. And I would not have had the weapon if I didnโ€™t agree to these terms that I had given my self in my own mind So my question is. When all the good guys obey the law and hand in their weapons and the bad guys donโ€™t what then. More than likely The bad guys have not registered there weapon or given a proper address for censure

  31. That is precisely the problem with my country there is none of that:
"I felt a responsibility to the rest of society…"
    NONE

  32. 3:45 "I felt as if I had a bit of a duty to the rest of our society."

This is it right here. The problem in America is that too many people can't seem to grasp the basic concept that "it's not all about you."

  33. Citation that gun control worked in Australia? Because it didn't. I like Jon Stewart and I loved the Daily Show but this wasn't researched, it was a bit with a false premise.

  34. The Australian and American comparison regarding gun control is pretty stupid. The gun culture in American is COMPLETELY different from Australian. America was literally a country born from war. And because of it, there is a 2nd amendment. The American government doesnโ€™t treat its citizens like children who โ€œcanโ€™t handle gunsโ€

  35. I'm watching this now in 2019 after 19 people were massacred in Texas just days after 3 people were killed in California. But still many of my fellow Americans refuse to see why we need more efficient gun control and we need it yesterday. I'll never understand this obsessive gun worshipping culture. Damn near everyone else has managed to regulate their use just fine, for some reason we're too stupid to catch up.

  36. Life is about balancing risks . For perfect safety we wouldnโ€™t allow anybody to do anything . Pick your poison .

  37. This is so brilliant. Being right is one thing; making a fool of your opponent by having him to publicly say stupid stuff is on a completely different level.

    …"Ninja police"… This is gold !

  38. One question to conservatives who never question the military budget or what it is spent on and believe that guns should be made available to the citizenry to keep safe from tyrannous regimes: if you are allowing the military to buy whatever it wants (never questioning it) and a budget that keeps getting bigger then how the fuck are you going to be able to do jackshit about it?
