Southeastern University staff to be trained to carry concealed firearms on campus

COMING THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK WITH SMALL RAIN CHANCES I’LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT THAT DOES TO OUR FORECAST COMING UP. NEW THIS MORNING POLICE AND BODY CAM VIDEO FROM INSIDE A UTAH HIGH SCHOOL MOMENTS AFTER A TEEN OPENED FIRE INSIDE A CLASSROOM. THE 15-YEAR OLD TOOK 2 GUNS TO SCHOOL AND FIRED ONE OF THEM IN A CLASSROOM BEFORE HE WAS STOPPED BY HIS PARENTS. WHEN THE OFFICERS GETS THERE YOU SEE HIS FATHER HOLDING HIM. THAT TEEN IS BEING CHARGED AS A JUVENILE. HIS ATTORNEY IS SEEKING A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION FOR THE YOUNG MAN. WELL, SITUATIONS LIKE THAT ARE THE REASON THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE IS TEAMING UP TO ARM PROFESSORS. WE EXPECT TO GET MORE DETAILS IN JUST A FEW HOURS. BUT RYAN HUGHES TALKED TO STUDENTS ON CAMPUS TO FIND OUT IF THEY’RE FOR OR AGAINST ARMED INSTRUCTORS. A MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT IS SCHEDULED HERE IN LAKELAND, GUNS COULD SOON BECOME PART OF THE CLASSROOM. AT THIS PRIVATE SCHOOL GUNS MIGHT BE THE LAST THING YOU’D EXPECT ON THE MINDS OF STUDENTS. THAT’S NOT THE CASE TODAY. THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE IN SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY ARE TEAMING UP TO TRAIN PROFESSORS TO CARRY CONCEALED WEAPONS ON CAMPUS. I FEEL THAT IT CAN BE AN APPROPRIATE WAY TO KEEP STUDENTS SAFE, TO KEEP STAFF STAFF. I THINK THERE’S MORE TO IT THAN STARTING OFF WITH PROFESSORS HAVING GUNS. IT WOULD PROVIDE TRAINING TO SELECT STAFF MEMBERS. THEY’D NEED TO UNDERGO RIGOROUS BACKGROUND CHECKS, A HUNDRED HOURS OF FIREARMS TRAINING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION BEFORE THEY COULD CARRY. STUDENTS WELCOME THE IDEA BUT VALISSA THINKS. IF THEY REALLY WANT TO ADVANCE THEIR SECURITY THEY COULD HAVE THE SECURITY GUARDS CARRY THE CONCEALED WEAPONS IF THEY WANT TO. IN A STATEMENT THE SHERIFF SAID WE KNOW ONE MORE CRITICAL THING WE CAN DO TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LIVES IMPACTED IN AN ACTIVE INCIDENT IS A SHORTER RESPONSE TIME FOR THE GOOD GUYS TO INTERRUPT AND STOP THE BAD GUYS. THE UNIVERSITY AND SHERIFFS OFFICE WILL UNVEIL MORE
