Police ID student accused of bringing handgun to school


GOOD EVENING, SHAINA IS IN FOR STACEY TONIGHT. FIRST AT 5:00, A STUDENT AT SCAVO HIGH SCHOOL IN DES MOINES HAS BEEN ARRESTED AFTER HAVING A LOADED HANDGUN IN HIS BACKPACK. SHAINA: 17-YEAR-OLD TAARIQ MOORE IS CHARGED WITH CARRYING WEAPONS CHARGES ARE EXPECTED KCCI’S HANNAH HILYARD IS LIVE AT THE SCHOOL TONIGHT WITH THE DETAILS OF WHAT HAPPENED. AND HANNAH THE OFFICER GOT A TIP ABOUT THE GUN? HANNAH: THAT’S RIGHT. AN OFFICER AT ANOTHER SCHOOL ALERTED THE OFFICER HERE AT SCAVO, OF A STUDENT WITH A GUN. HE IMMEDIATELY GOT IN TOUCH WITH MOORE, AND TOOK HIM TO HIS OFFICE ON THE 4TH FLOOR OF THE BUILDING. WHEN THE OFFICER QUESTIONED THE SUSPECT, A SCUFFLE BROKE OUT BETWEEN THE TWO. BOTH SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES. ONCE THEMOORE WAS IN CUSTODY, A LOADED HANDGUN WAS FOUND IN HIS BACKPACK. NOW ALL OF THIS HAPPENED WITHIN AN HOUR, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL DAY. POLICE SAY THERE WAS NEVER ANY DANGER TO THE OTHER STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL, THE SCHOOL NOT NEEDING TO GO ON LOCKDOWN.>>WE THINK IT MIGHT RELATE TO AN INCIDENT MAYBE A WEEK OR SO AGO WHERE THERE WAS SOME VIOLENCE BETWEEN THIS STUDENT AND SOME OTHER KIDS, BUT WE DON’T SEE ANY THREAT TO THE GENERAL POPULATION OF THE SCHOOL.
