One of Hogan’s appointees to panel that reviews handgun permits was denied


MEANTIME, SHOWERS, FOR A FEW MORE HOURS. . OF THE MUCH MORE ON YOUR LOCAL FORECAST, COMING UP. á GOVERNOR HOGAN APPOINTED 5 MEMBERS TO A PANEL THAT REVIEWS HANDGUN PERMITS. THOSE POSITIONS ARE TEMPORARY UNTIL THE STATE SENATE APPROVES THEM. 4 OF THE 5 WERE APPROVED TODAY. RICHARD JURGENA WAS REJECTED BY THE STATE SENATE TODAY. JURGENA HAD MADE SOME COMMENTS RECENTLY QUESTIONING THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF MARYLAND’S CONCEALED WEAPON LAW. SOME SENATORS QUESTIONED THE COMMITMENT OF JURGENA TO THE MISSION OF THE REVIEW BOARD. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE MIKE MILLER WEIGHED IN ON THE DECISION. “I VOTED FOR THE NOMINEE. I BELIEVE THE GOVERNOR SHOULD HAVE THE NOMINATIONS THAT HE PUT FORTH. HE VETTED THEM. I VOTED FOR HIM BUT, A NUMBER OF PEOPLE RAISED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NOMINEE. THE MARYLAND STATE POLICE DOES AN INITIAL REVIEW OF ALL CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT APPLICATIONS. THE HANDGUN PERMIT REVIEW BOARD HEARS APPEALS FROM PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THEY WERE WRONGLY DENIED.
