New proposal would ban hotel guests in Hawaii to bring firearms or ammunition into rooms

THERE ARE NO STATE LAWS MAKING IT ILLEGAL FOR HOTEL GUESTS TO HAVE “GUNS” AND “AMMUNITION” IN THEIR ROOMS. BUT ONE STATE LAWMAKERS IS TRYING TO CHANGE THAT. BRIGETTE NAMATA JOINS US WITH A STORY THAT’S NEW AT TEN.. BRIGETTE? BRIG: TURNS OUT, THE STATE LAWMAKER WHO INTRODUCED THIS PROPOSAL GOT THE IDEA FROM WATCHING ONE OF OUR STORIES. REP. TOM BROWER: “I WAS WATCHING KHON, AND THERE WAS A STORY…” THIS IS THE STORY REPRESENTATIVE TOM BROWER IS TALKING ABOUT. LAST MAY, I REPORTED HONOLULU POLICE DISCOVERED MULTIPLE GUNS, 18 KNIVES, AND MORE THAN 800 ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION IN A WAIKIKI HOTEL ROOM. A 38-YEAR-OLD LOCAL MAN TOLD POLICE HE BROUGHT THE WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION TO THE HOTEL ROOM OVER THE COURSE OF A FEW DAYS. HE WAS ARRESTED, AND THE WEAPONS WERE CONFISCATED. REP. TOM BROWER: “THIS IS CERTAINLY AN ISSUE LEGISLATORS NEED TO LOOK INTO. I THINK IT’S VERY RESPONSIBLE TO GET THE CONVERSATION GOING.” CURRENTLY, BROWER SAYS THERE ARE NO HAWAII LAWS BANNING HOTEL GUESTS FROM HAVING GUNS OR AMMO IN THEIR ROOM, SOMETHING HE CONSIDERS DANGEROUS. LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND MILITARY MEMBERS. REP. TOM BROWER: “I UNDERSTAND HUNTERS MAY GO FROM ISLAND TO ISLAND AND PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN GUN SHOWS. BUT THIS IS GOOD TO BRING THAT CONVERSATION TO THE PUBLIC. BUT I THINK THERE’S A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT THAT PERSON IN THE HOTEL ROOM NEXT DOOR HAS IN THEIR ROOM.” BROWER SAYS HE IS OPEN TO HEARING FROM OTHERS ON HOW TO MAKE HIS BILL BETTER. “THERE MAY NEED TO BE SOME COMPROMISE. IF THERE’S A VALID ABOUT IT AND WE WANT THE PUBLIC TO KNOW ABOUT IT.” BRIGETTE: AGAIN BROWER IS OPEN TO HEARING INPUT ON HIS PROPOSAL. FIND OUT HOW ON OUR WEBSITE, KHON2 DOT COM. MARISA.

  1. As long as they provide the insurance and safe holding lockers, cool got no problem having my firearms protected while I am not using. What's in my room is none yo business! This smells like soy infested end run around our freedoms and liberties which I strongly believe must be based on personal responsibility and genuine care and service to one's community. There's a lot going on all the time and that's how they chip away at your/our sovereignty. Read bills like this with a scrutinizing scepticism!

  2. Good law. No reason for tourists to bring guns into hotels. Just idiots planning on shooting others from their hotel balcony.

  3. So should we know that your wife has a dangerous dildo in the room next to us also?
Stupid people, when will we learn that gun's don't kill or hurt people, people kill and hurt other people. We may need to also outlaw car's/vehicle because it kills people also, it's not the person behind the wheel. It's funny how our police and military have gun's to protect us and our country, but we can not protect our selves within the 10+ minutes that it takes for a police officer to respond to a emergency call. I'm waiting to see when someone sues the State/City for not being there to protect someone's life when some crazy person takes a life. Better yet, let's take away the rights of anyone whom tries to defend themselves against a attacker. Stop the criminals not the law abiding citizen's. How about making it like the airline's that a hotel guest has to declare that he has a firearm/ammunition when checking into a hotel. We often forget that we are the first responders to a crime that may happen to us, the law abiding citizen.

  4. OMG LMAO!!!!!!!! Is this guy for real? Whats next drugs, hookers and murders have to register at the desk I can't stop laughing. look a group back in the days said this line "this is not China, this is not the place where they took down the wall! This is America and we have the right to do" as we please in our own private rooms. I just had a thought Pre-crime

  5. Putting aside anyone’s opinion about the 2nd amendment this is a useless idea since it will never be enforceable. Are they going to search every tourist every time they go into their hotel room?

  6. Good luck trying to get rid of axis deer in places in Hawaii where they are ruining the local endangered ecosystems and try to destroy the states hunting tourism in one blow. This is the stupidest thing I ever heard of that can tank the Hawaiian state economy. Plus, what anyone has in their hotel rooms is nobody's business since when you pay for it, it is your residence and your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and every other constitutional amendment and civil rights apply. If your rights as an American citizen don't apply in Hawaii, you are in a third world country and nobody will want to visit to spend their money to be a prisoner on an island for their vacation.

  7. As a state that is part of the United states and the United states constitution applies to citizens and even visitors from foreign countries, does anyone want to visit or live in a state where their constitutional rights do not apply? A temporary residence is still subject to the constitution of the united states and a person's civil rights. You cant break the law to make a law!

  8. Arrested for what? Nobody has the RIGHT to know what property you have in your room. I'm sure if here wad arrested footer something that stuck they would be telling the word. Poor, biased, politically charged journalism in my opinion.
