Mayor Peduto Pushes To Rid City’s Pension Fund Of Fossil Fuels, Firearms

NEAR WOODS RUN AND CENTRAL AVENUE. LAMBERT IS CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HOMICIDE AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT.>NEW AT SIX, THE MAYOR WANTS MONEY FROM FOSSIL FUELS AND FIREARMS TO BE KEPT OUT OF THE CITIES PENSION FUNDS. WE ARE JOINED BY OUR REPORTER LIVE DOWNTOWN WITH THE DETAILS. Reporter: CITIES, STATES, UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE CONSIDERING SIMILAR PLANS, TAKE YOUR PENSION MONEY OUT OF FOSSIL FUELS, OUT OF GUNS, OUT OF FOR-PROFIT PRISONS. IT’S PART OF THE MAYOR’S PUSH FOR A GREEN CITY, BUT IT’S ALSO WHAT THE MAYOR CALLS A MORAL ISSUE. SHOULD PITTSBURGH’S HAVE BILLION-DOLLAR PENSION FUND BE INVESTING IN OIL, GAS AND COAL? GUNS AND AMMUNITION, FOR-PROFIT PRISONS? THE MAYOR SAYS NO. IF WE PUT MONEY IN, WE NEED TO MAKE OUR SOCIETY BETTER IN THE FUTURE BETTER, NOT TAKE AWAY FROM IT. THE MAYOR WAS OUT OF TOWN TUESDAY, BUT HE WROTE A LETTER SAYING IN PART THE PLOY EASE AND RESIDENCE RESERVE ARE BEING NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY THE STRESSORS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, SENSELESS ACTS OF GUN VIOLENCE, AND AN INCARCERATION SYSTEM THAT IS ENABLING INEQUALITY. THESE ARE AREAS OUR FINANCIAL MEANS SHOULD NOT PERPETUATE. ” WHEN IT COMES TO THE BROKEN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM THAT IS BUT PROFIT FIRST, WHEN IT HAS COME TO WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH MASS SHOOTINGS IN THIS COUNTRY, WE ARE NOT GOING TO USE OUR PUBLIC DOLLARS TO LINE THE POCKETS OF THESE COMPANIES. THE MAYOR AS THE PENSION BOARD TO FORM A COMMITTEE TO COME UP WITH A STRATEGY BY THE END OF THE YEAR. COULD THIS HURT THE PENSION FUND? BE MET EVEN IF THERE IS A FINANCIAL HIT TO THIS, WHICH WE BELIEVE IT COULD BE DONE WITHOUT, IT’S ONE THAT IS WORTH TAKING. IT’S TIME TO STAND UP AND SEND THE MESSAGE THAT OUR DOLLARS WILL NOT BE USED FOR THIS. NEW YORK CITY IS TRYING TO DO SOMETHING SIMILAR, THEY HAVE 190 BILLION-DOLLAR PENSION, AND THEY ARE FINDING THIS DIFFICULT TO DO.
