JOHNSON CITY POLICE ARE URGING PEOPLE TO KEEP THEIR CARS LOCKED AND VALUABLES OUT OF SIGHT. AN INCREASE OF CAR BREAK-INS IS PROMPTING EXTRA PATROLS IN THE BOONES CREEK AREA. CURTIS MCCLOUD JOINS US LIVE OUTSIDE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IN JOHNSON CITY…WHERE HE LEARNED ABOUT A DISTURBING TREND — THEIVES BREAKING INTO CARS TO STEAL GUNS. YEA POLICE TELL ME ABOUT 4 GUNS HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM CARS WITHIN THE LAST MONTH. I’M TOLD THAT THEY TYPICALLY SEE ONE OR TWO CASES LIKE THIS A YEAR BUT THE HABIT OF PEOPLE GETTING INTO PEOPLE’S CARS AND STEALING GUNS IS ON THE RISE AND SO ARE CAR BURGLARIES IN JOHNSON CITY IN GENERAL— LATELY POLICE HAVE NOTICED AN UPTICK OF THESE BURLARIES IN THE BOONES CREEK AREA. ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF CASES REPORTED TO POLICE INVOVLED VEHICLES THAT HAD BEEN LEFT UNLOCKED. WE SPOKE WITH PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO SAY THE THOUGHT OF PEOPLE STEALING GUNS OUT OF CARS IS STARTLING. (KATHY LEE/ LIVES IN BOONES CREEK AREA) “THAT’S EVEN MORE SCARY, WHOSE GOT THOSE GUNS? WHAT KIND OF MIND SET ARE THOSE PEOPLE WHOSE GOT THOSE GUNS, WHY DO YOU THINK WE CARRY A GUN.” (SGT. DON SHEPARD/ JCPD) “PEOPLE WITH HANDGUNS ARE LEAVING THEM IN THE VEHICLE, ARE NOT VERY RESPONSIBLE. MOST PEOPLE PUT THERE HANDGUNS UNDER THE SEAT, THAT IS THE FIRST PLACE THEY ARE GOING TO CHECK FOR ONE.” SERGEANT DON SHEPARD SAYS THEY GET ABOUT 30 TO 35 AUTO BURGLARY CASES EACH MONTH. ANOTHER AREA OF CONCERN OF COURSE IS SHOPPING CENTERS POLICE SAY PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY SECURE THEIR BELONGINGS BEFORE HEADING INSIDE STORES. JOSH. CURTIS, THANKS. AGAIN, JOHNSON CITY POLICE URGE PEOPLE TO BE ON ALERT. TAKE SIMPLE STEPS SUCH AS LOCKING YOUR CAR AT ALL TIMES…AND KEEPING ITEMS YOU’VE PURCHASED OUT OF SIGHT. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE BREAK-INS — OR IF YOU NOTICE SOMEONE SUSPICIOUS SCOPING OUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD — TAKE ACTION…AND CALL CRIME STOPPERS AT THE NUMBER WE’VE PLACED ON YOUR SCREEN.
